the glacier, a movie star?
Yes. The Engadin mountain backdrops were already breathtaking performers in the 1920s. In 1929, Arnold Francks’ classic mountain film was filmed here on the Morteratsch-Gletscher «The white hell of the Piz Palü». A silent film that not only shows the beauty but also the dangers of the mountains. Steep walls, avalanches, the famous crevasses and glacial caves – all radiate unearthly beauty and allure.
What Charmed you on the glacier?
I think it's the mix of beauty and danger that draws me so much to this place. It is the constant transformation of a rather strange ice world that amazes. To my ears there is nothing more fascinating than hearing the glacier follow its natural course. The rolling stones give my ears an unforgettable soundscape and show us how small we actually are in comparison to the whole world. (Alai, receptionist)
The Hotel Morteratsch – the ideal starting point
Our house is at the foot of the glacier moraine. As soon as the first rays of sun appear behind the mountain, our terrace offers the ideal place to let the experience take effect. Be it with a Gletscher- coffee, a Gletscher- fondue or in one of our rooms with Gletscher- view, in Morteratsch you can see the glacier experience.
But beware. Forget those driven not!
When the glacier melts, forms glacier caves and séracs (ice towers), which are very impressive. These are also caused by movement, gravity and pressure. This year, a small new cave has formed at the Gletscher- tongue. The Gletscher-H cave is a very sensitive place for a glacier. Within a very short time, even seconds, their shape can change. If you have no experience, don't risk anything!
Let yourself be advised and accompanied by professionals. Discover the magical frozen blue world risk-free, it's really worth it! We can give you the Mountaineering school in Pontresina warmly recommend. Remember, even if it looks like nothing can happen, the "eternal" ice holds great ones driven.
Nevertheless, a glacier hike or even a visit from afar is an experience that everyone can put on their Bucket-List. Definitely worth it. Even if it's just about earning the Gletscher-Kaffee.
We send warm Gletscher-Greetings from the Morteratsch
