Bernina Express (No. 673)

The 53-kilometre »Bernina Express« mountain bike - route took its name from the famous Rhaetian Railway train and is as varied as it is inspiring. From Samedan, the route leads along the Bernina Valley through uniquely beautiful landscapes, which repeatedly reveal views of the imposing glaciers of the Bernina massif. At the top of the pass, turn left past Lago Bianco before the descent into Valposchiavo begins. The terrace of the "Belvedere" restaurant and the buffet at the "Alp Grüm" train station invite you to take a break. At Cavaglia it goes past the glacier garden and down to Poschiavo.

Hike

The high valley of the Upper Engadine with its varied, 580-kilometre hiking trail-Netz is a true paradise. The contrasts that characterize this region cast a spell over everyone. The archaic nature can be experienced up close, be it while hiking on one of the breathtaking panoramic trails, during an exciting themed hike, while walking along the glittering lakes or on a trekking tour lasting several days.

There are also hiking trails that are suitable for pushchairs, which are particularly suitable for families, as well as ten wheelchair-accessible hiking trails. For those who prefer a longer mountain tour, the areas of Corviglia/Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Muottas Muragl/Alp Languard, which are accessible by mountain railways, offer fascinating high-altitude hikes with spectacular views.

The Mortertasch-Crew knows and loves the beautiful valley – ask us!

Highlights in the Engadine

altitude training

Generations of spa guests knew about the appealing factors of alpine spa towns. Now athletes are increasingly using the performance-enhancing effect of altitude training. Just staying at an altitude between 1500 and 2200 m above sea level. M. has a slight training effect, and the training sessions carried out at this altitude are proven to have a more intensive effect than those in the lowlands. The reason for this is the "lack of oxygen" that forces the body to adapt, which ultimately leads to better performance.

Water sports

Whether kiting, surfing, sailing: the legendary Maloja wind makes many water sports possible. The idyllic Lake Silvaplana at 1800 meters with wind forces of three to six Beaufort provides the ideal conditions. The lake plateau has long been a cult in the Wind- and kitesurfing scene. The reason for this is not least the kitesurf-Pionier Stefan Popprath, who set up his base here a long time ago.

On the Silvaplaner- and Lake St. Moritz, the Swiss-, Europe- and sometimes also the world championships in kitesurfing are held, which are considered the highlights of the season. Try out the trend sport too. Stand up paddling is recommended until midday when it is still quite calm on the lakes, in order to fully enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Windsurfing

They come from all over the world and feel that tingle of anticipation as soon as the pass road reveals the view of Lake Silvaplana: windsurfers have long since made the Upper Engadin one of their favorite destinations. While advanced and pros set their sails at Silvaplana, families and beginners will find ideal conditions in Sils. And they all know about the phenomenon of the Maloja wind, which sets in shortly after noon.

fishing

Cheerfully bubbling streams, crystal-clear mountain lakes, rushing glacial rivers and peaceful lake bays: the Engadin is a uniquely diverse water kingdom and therefore a paradise for anglers. There has always been an above-average number of fish in its waters. From the valley floor at 1800 meters to high alpine heights, there are waters in which ambitious fishermen get their money's worth as well as occasional anglers or children who want to swim a few "worms" for fun.

Stand up paddling

Stand Up Paddling has become a real Boom- sport in recent years. Originally created to take to the waves, it has evolved into relaxing on the lakes. The sport is particularly idyllic in the morning on the Engadine mountain lakes. Until midday or on days with little wind, Lake Silvaplana and Lake St. Moritz are still. Then there is hardly anything nicer than gliding silently over the water with a stand up paddle board and enjoying the lakes in peace.
