Water sports

Whether kiting, surfing or sailing: the legendary Maloja wind makes a number of water sports possible. The idyllic Silvaplana Lake at 1800 metres with wind speeds of three to six Beaufort ensures optimal conditions. The lake plateau has long been a cult in the wind- and kitesurfing scene. The reason for this is not least the kitesurf-Ppioneer Stefan Popprath, who set up his base here a long time ago.

The Swiss, European and sometimes even world kitesurfing championships are held on the Silvaplaner- and St. Moritzersee, and are considered the highlights of the season. Try out this trendy sport yourself. Until lunchtime, when it is still quite quiet on the lakes, stand up paddling is recommended to make the most of the peace and quiet of nature.

The «Swiss Kitesurfing School Silvaplana» offers lessons that will help you learn the right kitesurfing-technique quickly and correctly. It looks back on 18 years of experience and is considered the first kitesurfing-school in the world– after all, the trend sport was invented on Lake Silvaplana.

They come from all over the world and feel this tingling of anticipation as soon as the pass road opens up to the view of Lake Silvaplana: windsurfers have long since chosen the Upper Engadine as one of their favorite destinations. While advanced and professional windsurfers set their sails in Silvaplana, families and beginners find ideal conditions in Sils. And they all know about the phenomenon of the Maloja wind, which starts shortly after midday.

Stand up paddling has become a real boom sport in recent years. Originally developed as a way to throw yourself into the waves, it has now developed into a way to relax on the lakes. The sport is particularly idyllic in the mornings on the Engadin mountain lakes. Until midday or on days with little wind, the Silvaplana and St. Moritz lakes are also still. Then there is hardly anything nicer than gliding silently over the water with a stand up paddle and enjoying the lakes in peace.
